Description

On this Jazz and Swing Harmonies day, we shall be singing close harmonies, 1920s-1940s style, but not all the songs will be from that era. In just a day, we won’t aim to master one complex jazz standard from beginning to end; instead we may learn a chorus from one, a verse from another and add some original acapella swing created especially for these workshops. Some parts will be quicker to learn, but there will be some challenging close harmonies and fiendish rhythms that take a bit longer and can offer a challenge even to experienced acapella singers.

TIMETABLE: The workshop will start promptly at 10.30 am – you’re welcome to arrive any time after 10.00 am. To help keep our energy up during the day, there will be a refreshments break in the morning, a break for lunch around 1.00 pm and probably a short break in the afternoon. We’ll finish at 4.00 pm.

REFRESHMENTS: Hot drinks, biscuits and fruit will be available, free of charge, at the beginning of the day and during all the breaks. Tap water will be available throughout the day. You’re invited to bring a small amount of food to share for lunch, creating an instant feast between us. If you prefer to cater for yourself separately, that’s fine.

VENUE: The Calvinist Methodist chapel of Twr-gwyn, was built in 1854 and a chapel house and schoolhouse were added later. In 2003 the chapel was bought by Penrallt Baptist Church and subsequently renamed. It was decided that the rear of the building should be made available for use by the community and so Canolfan Penrallt Centre was born, with the aim of promoting, encouraging, and developing a sense of community in Upper Bangor and the surrounding area. Access: There is a ramped path up to the entrance, which is towards the rear of the building. Inside, the centre is fully accessible, and it has accessible toilets.

LOCATION: The centre is 5 minutes drive from the A55. ½ a mile from Bangor train station and just a 1 minute walk from local bus stops.
