Description

A swinging day of tantalizing melodies, crunchy harmonies and fiendish rhythms. This Jazz and swing harmonies workshop is inspired by the complex, close harmonies found in British and American popular songs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The day can include standards from this period, unexpected songs that have been given the jazz or swing treatment and songs that have been created purely for these workshops. Some of the melodies may be familiar and therefore quicker to pick up, but the harmony parts tend to take longer to learn and can offer a challenge even to experienced acapella singers.

TIMETABLE: The workshop will start promptly at 10.30 am – you’re welcome to arrive anytime after 10.00 am. There will be a refreshments break in the morning, a break for lunch around 1.00 pm and a short break in the afternoon. We’ll finish at 4.00 pm.

REFRESHMENTS: Hot drinks, biscuits and fruit will be available at the beginning of the day and during all the breaks and tap water throughout the day. You’re invited to bring a small amount of food to share for lunch, creating an instant feast between us. However, if you prefer to cater for yourself separately, that’s fine.

VENUE: This workshop will be held in the Quaker Meeting House in the popular Clarendon Park area of Leicester. It provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere to a whole range of groups. We shall be singing in the large meeting room, which looks out onto a small, private garden. Access: This venue is accessible to disabled people.

LOCATION: The meeting house is a 15 minute drive from the M1 and M69 and about a 20 minute walk from Leicester Railway Station. Perfect for a browse around some independent shops or cafes nearby after the workshop… or a 30 minute walk to Leicester City Centre and the King Richard III visitor centre.
