Description
A day of singing… for the pure joy of it! We shall be exploring a great mix of songs and styles, from golden oldies and international favourites to originals, chosen to inspire people of different abilities and tastes. Some of the songs will be short and simple, some will offer a challenge to those who want it, but all of the songs are chosen with the aim of having a right good sing.
TIMETABLE: The workshop will start promptly at 10.30 am – you’re welcome to arrive anytime after 10.00 am. There will be a refreshments break in the morning, a break for lunch around 1.00 pm and a short break in the afternoon. We’ll finish at 4.00 pm.
REFRESHMENTS: Hot drinks, biscuits and fruit will be available at the beginning of the day and during all the breaks and tap water throughout the day. You’re invited to bring a small amount of food to share for lunch, creating an instant feast between us. However, if you prefer to cater for yourself separately, that’s fine.
VENUE: Once the village school, this small community centre is held in trust by a board of local volunteers, to keep a community and cultural heart in the village of Pentrefelin. Y Ganolfan (The Centre) has a small meeting room, a kitchen and the main hall, where we shall be singing. Make sure you don’t have to hurry off afterwards, as a post-sing swim or stroll on the beach in Cricieth (5 minutes drive), or at one of the other nearby beaches, would be the ideal end to the day!
LOCATION: Y Ganolfan is in the village of Pentrefelin, between Cricieth and Porthmadog. The address is: Y Ganolfan Pentrefelin, A497 Pentrefelin, Criccieth, Gwynedd, LL52 0PU. The hall is on the south side of the A 497 (see map). Don’t follow Sat Nav as this will send you to the wrong side of the road.
- FROM CRICCIETH: Y Ganolfan is at the other end of the village on the right hand side, just before the 40mph sign.
- FROM PORTHMADOG (or Tremadog roundabout): Y Ganolfan is the first building on your left just after the 40mph sign.
GETTING THERE BY ROAD: Pentrefelin is quite easy to get to, via A roads however NB. If you’re travelling from the direction of Bangor, along the A487, your Sat Nav will probably direct you down Tabor lane, a single track lane with occasional passing places. Instead of this, I would recommend the following (also see map):
- EITHER: Just after Bryncir, take the FIRST turning right to Criccieth. From Criccieth, follow signs towards Porthmadog. Then see location info above.
- OR: Carry on to Tremadog Roundabout. Turn right here and follow signs towards Criccieth. Then see location info above.
PARKING: There is a car park at the centre.
GETTING THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There are quite a few villages in North Wales called Pentrefelin NB. when you’re looking up public transport options, your destination is: Pentrefelin, Gwynedd. You can find travel information here: Traveline Cymru.
- The nearest train stations are Criccieth and Porthmadog (with connections to Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury and Birmingham) and Bangor (with connections to Chester, Manchester and Cardiff).
- Bus services: T2, 03 and 12 stop just outside and opposite Y Ganolfan.
…so how do you actually spell Cricieth? One C in the middle or two? There is no double C in the Welsh language, so Criccieth is an anglicised version of the Welsh: Cricieth. The anglicised version is currently the official spelling and it’s probably what you will see on bus timetables, railway stations, road signs etc (unless one of the Cs has been rubbed out!), so I’ve used this version when talking about directions.
