A swinging day of tantalizing melodies, crunchy harmonies and fiendish rhythms. This Jazz and swing harmonies workshop is inspired by the complex, close harmonies found in British and American popular songs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The day can include standards from this period, unexpected songs that have been given the jazz or swing treatment and songs that have been created purely for these workshops. Some of the melodies may be familiar and therefore fairly quick to pick up, but the harmony parts tend to take longer to learn and can offer a challenge even to experienced acapella singers.
TIMETABLE: The workshop will start promptly at 10.30 am – you’re welcome to arrive any time after 10.00 am. To help keep our energy up during the day, there will be a refreshments break in the morning, a break for lunch around 1.00 pm and probably a short break in the afternoon. We’ll finish at 4.00 pm.
REFRESHMENTS: Hot drinks, biscuits and fruit will be available, free of charge, at the beginning of the day and during all the breaks. Tap water will be available throughout the day. You’re invited to bring a small amount of food to share for lunch, creating an instant feast between us. If you prefer to cater for yourself separately, that’s fine.
VENUE: The Footprint building is the National Trust’s eco-base at St Catherine’s Wood near Windermere in the Lake District National Park. It has been constructed with straw bale walls, car tyre foundations, local timber frames, floors and walkways, an oak shake roof, clay and lime plasters and sheep’s wool insulation. For cooler days, there’s a very efficient wood burner. It’s a beautiful and inspirational space, located in an enchanting wood! Access: The whole site is accessible to disabled people, however, please note, the toilets are in a separate building.
LOCATION: This venue is about 30 minutes drive from the M6. Local buses stop near the end of the drive, on the A592 Kirkstone Pass. However, the recommended way to travel there is by train to Windermere station and then a 20 minute walk from Windermere train station, via the woods from the bottom of Orrest Head giving great views of the lake.
